When You Feel Purposeless: Create Beauty, Like Your Creator

There are seasons in life where we feel aimless. Numb. Like the days blur together and we’re just going through the motions. I’ve felt that. Maybe you have too. That quiet ache of wondering, “What am I even doing with my life?” But I want to remind you—you were created on purpose, for a purpose.

Our God is a Creator. In the very beginning, He didn’t start with a factory—He started with a garden (Genesis 2:8). He formed beauty from dust, spoke light into darkness, and shaped life with His hands. And since we are made in His image (Genesis 1:27), that means we are creators too. Not necessarily of grand masterpieces—but of beauty, peace, joy, and light in the everyday moments.

When I started feeling that sense of purposelessness creep in, I chose to respond by creating. Not for social media. Not for applause. But to reflect my Creator and bring beauty into my world. I've started decorating our home on a budget, making it a place that feels joyful and welcoming. I've been baking cakes—simple, imperfect, and sweet. I’ve planted herbs and veggies in our garden, and I’m watching life grow from the dirt. I enrolled our kids in swim lessons, stepping outside of our usual Christian circles, and into places where we can simply be the light.

Each of these things may seem small. But they are acts of worship and purpose. Each one is a chance to bring beauty into a dark and broken world.

Isaiah 61:3 tells us that God gives us “beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of despair.” What an exchange. From ashes—He makes art. From dirt—He grows gardens.

We can get stuck in our pain, in our past, in the scrolling trap of comparison. The world wants us to consume. Watch others live. Watch others create. But that leaves us feeling bored, boring, depressed, and disconnected. The antidote isn’t consumption—it’s creation.

When we create something beautiful—whether it's a tidy room, a home-cooked meal, a conversation with a neighbor, or a moment of laughter with our kids—we are participating in God’s purpose for us. We are reflecting His nature. And in doing so, we find our own sense of meaning again.

Ephesians 2:10 reminds us, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” He made us on purpose and He has good works planned for us.

So today, if you feel like you’re drifting—don’t give in to despair. Get up. Open your hands. Ask the Lord to show you one small thing to create today. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Just make something beautiful. Something good. Something that brings light.

You don’t have to have a huge platform to make a difference. You just need a willing heart. The world is desperate for true beauty—beauty that reflects God’s love, creativity, and joy. Let’s go out and plant it everywhere we can.
